May is Wildfire Preparedness/Awareness Month

As we enter the beginning of wildfire season it's crucial to be prepared, says Ric Lentz, Emergency Manager/SAR Coordinator with the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.  

Here are a few key steps you can take to prepare for wildfires:

• Develop an Emergency Plan: Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do in case of a wildfire. Establish evacuation routes and designate meeting points.
• Assemble a Disaster Kit: Pack essential items such as water, non-perishable food, medications, important documents, and first aid supplies. Keep this kit in an easily accessible location.
• Create Defensible Space: Clear away dry leaves, branches, and other flammable materials from around your home. Maintain a buffer zone of at least 30 feet around structures.
• Support your local Fire Safe Council and Firewise Community: Get involved in wildfire preparedness initiatives, such as neighborhood clean-up events or fire safety workshops.

“By taking these proactive measures, you can help protect yourself, your family, and your community from the devastating impacts of wildfires,” Lentz said. “Remember, preparedness is key to resilience. Let's work together to ensure that we are all ready to face the challenges of wildfire season.”
